First Flush: Tea Harvest Begins

First Flush is the very first plucking of a tea plant's harvest season. The tea leaves that are plucked (the new growth) during the First Flush are the youngest and most tender part of the tea plant. These young tender leaves are usually more delicate, light, floral and fresh in flavor.

The First Flush Festival is an annual celebration commemorating the first tea leaf harvest of the season. Held at the Charleston Tea Plantation, the only tea plantation in North America, locals from the Charleston area and visitors alike make the trek to Wadmalaw Island for a day of music, food, and shopping with local artisans.

Although the festival for this year was cancelled for unknown reasons, the Charleston Tea Plantation still conducts daily tours and has a variety of teas and other souvenirs in their gift shop. If you never went on one of the tours, it is definitely a great historical, learning experience and a treat.
