TheraPoetry: The Healing Voice of Grief Through Poems

TheraPoetry: The Healing Voice of Grief Through Poems
By Kym Gordon Moore

Often, what seems to be difficult to communicate verbally can have a profound healing voice through the art of poetry. TheraPoetry, the healing process or therapy through poetry, helps to give a voice to sentiments of grief, pain, loneliness, hurt and heartbreak that can be difficult to express verbally. Tragic, life-changing events can result in feelings of uncertainty, confusion, abandonment, hopelessness, injustice, isolation and depending on some circumstances, even retaliation.

The five steps of TheraPoetry (Perception, Origin, Expression, Medicinal and Solution) will help you work through your state of grief:

  • Perception:  Being aware of what is causing your grief (death, a grim health diagnosis, divorce)

  • Origin: Acknowledging your grief exists and identifying what is causing you to feel lost, broken or depressed.

  • Expression: Write down descriptions about how you feel. Initially, do not try to put what you write in any particular context. Begin by writing simple words or phrases to describe your pain, such as sad, empty, lonely or heartbroken. Slowly read the expressions you wrote aloud. This step will help you connect to the nature of your tragedy and work through your grief.

  • Medicinal: This process will help you to begin healing by working your way through those feelings of sadness and despair. How can you use your experience with grief positively? This medicinal phase can be a prescription for healing by understanding and connecting to those who have gone through similar experiences.

  • Solution: This is your breakthrough phase. You may begin to notice small inklings of life, the beauty of nature, the ease of laughing again or the joy a child or pet brings to a family. You never know when this breakthrough for you could possibly turn into a personal crusade.

The degrees of grief vary with every individual, including twins. The stages of grief recovery are experienced differently, depending on the person and circumstance. The phases of TheraPoetry are not substitutes for a professional diagnosis or medical therapeutic treatment for grief. These are simple, yet therapeutic suggestions on navigating through the journey of your pain when there is no one around to talk to. Poetry such as an Elegy, which began as a Greek metrical form, is a poem written out of personal loss, grief or sadness. Elements featured in an elegy can also be conveyed through other poetic forms like free verse, rhymed or triolets. Giving a voice and alternative to grief is like an eternal flame of life forever burning in your heart.
