Rhythms of Summer’s Eve: A Poem Celebrating National Poetry Month

Rhythms of Summer’s Eve

A gentle evening breeze brushing against your skin
songs welcoming the approach of night
tunes quite different from the dawn of day
not to be outdone by the croaking frogs
delicate harmonies of background chirps
from nearby birds and crickets
male cicadas luring the female with a mating song
a crescendo that mimics an orchestra of maracas.

Absorbing sweet melodies of the closing day
while perched atop the red-tip tree
an aggressive momma mockingbird protects her nest
from evening predators
lightening bugs flashing tiny whispers of light
as one soaks in this panoramic view
serenity is interrupted
by the stinging bite from a blood sucking mosquito.
