WRITING THE BREAKOUT NOVEL WITH DONALD MAASS – VERSION 2.0

Morning sessions are taught daily by Don Maass—and don’t miss the bonus micro-tension evening class based on techniques from The Fire in Fiction! Limited enrollment gives every student a chance to participate in class discussions and get valuable feedback. This year’s intensive will include new insights from Don’s upcoming release Writing 21st Century Fiction, giving the workshop a fresh feel for those who have attended previously. Each student also receives a private thirty-minute consultation with Don, who will read the first fifty pages of each student’s manuscript prior to the one-on-one sessions. Additional private sessions will be held with Lorin Oberweger, independent book editor with twenty-plus years of publishing experience, and other professional editors and writers on staff for the event. Spend your afternoons working on assigned exercises, networking with your fellow students, participating in valuab le critique groups or taking a walk along the beautiful Hood River to recharge and ponder your evolving story. All meals are included, and you’ll rest comfortably in private sleeping accommodations with your own bathroom. Space is limited; slots are filled on a first come first served basis. $1950 for new students (all-inclusive) or $1850 for returning students.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Showcase, Poets House’s free, annual exhibition of new
poetry books, chapbooks, broadsides, and multimedia titles. Opening on Saturday, June 30, 2012,
this year’s Showcase will be on view throughout the month of July and will include all of the year's new poetry and poetry-related books, chapbooks and multimedia titles published in the United States. More than 2,400 titles were in last year’s exhibition, representing close to 650 US publishers—commercial, university, independent, small and micro-presses.

These monthly writing workshops, led by various members of the Writing Room faculty, are designed to stimulate creativity and generate ideas for fiction and nonfiction. We'll use a series of short in-class writing exercises to inspire new work and deepen your writing.
