The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005 |
Ever wonder what it would feel like walking through 7,500
gates, 16 feet high with a width varying from 5 feet 6 inches to 18 feet,
lining 23 miles of footpaths, in a meandering sea of free-hanging
saffron-colored orange fabric panels? Christo and Jeanne Claude created “The
Gates,” an art project that opened on February 12, 2005 in New York City’s
Central Park.
The official title of this installation is called “The
Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005.” The fabric panels hang down to 7
feet above the ground. This event encouraged the collaboration between public
art and public poetry. According to Christo and Jeanne Claude, the works were
temporary in order to endow the works of art with a feeling of urgency to be
seen, and the love and tenderness brought by the fact that they will not last.

After The Gates installation was removed, most of the materials were recycled.
