Designed by Archi-Union Architect, this modern and contemporary teahouse and library is located in the backyard of Archi-Union Architect’s office located in Shanghai, China. Constructed from timber-formed concrete, the two-story teahouse has a glass facade. A lounge and reading room is behind the ground-floor tearoom, plus a staircase leading to the library above is concealed by contorted concrete walls inside the building.
The site is extremely constricted with walls on three sides. Only one side faces an open space containing a pool. The design of this teahouse tries to embody harmony by integrating openness and enclosure. This building is a logically obscure quadrilateral, which helps to maximize the amount of space. Ideally, the teahouse reacts to the site’s environment.
