Vietnam: Tea, Poetry and Wine?

Vietnam is increasing its popularity as an international tourism hot spot. Surprisingly, many Americans are booking their vacations to explore this tourist destination.

In the midst of the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, you will find a peaceful teahouse called Huong Tra Viet. Vien Tran, who is an artisan and wine collector owns this teahouse and specializes in making a special blend of wine from chrysanthemum flowers. You would think that a teahouse in Vietnam would only specialize in various blends and types of tea, but Vien Tran hopes to preserve this dying tradition of winemaking in Vietnam. Additionally, she holds flower arrangement classes, along with wine and tea appreciation classes at her teahouse.

The Vietnamese culture of winemaking is not as popular as it once was, but many people visit Huong Tra Viet to taste Tran’s special wine blend called “hoang hoa tuu” which is made from Indian Chrysanthemums and sticky rice, that is buried underground in a container for 6 to 10 years. Tran spent many years traveling and collecting the best wines and teas from all over the world. If you are ever in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam be sure to stop by Huong Tra Viet and indulge in a little poetry, tea or Chrysanthemum wine.
