Buncheong: Poetry in Clay

Korean Ceramic Art
Poetry in Clay,” a Buncheong exhibition at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California, will feature 64 masterworks from the Leeum Collection of the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea, along with many vases owned by the Asian Art Museum.

Buncheong is the process of covering ceramics with a mixture of white clay and water. When translated the term means “white-slipped celadon.” This traditional style of Korean stoneware has a bluish-green tone. Buncheong ware was always intended for daily use, as well as art that royalty collected. When Japan invaded Korea, this art form was one of the things they borrowed from the Koreans. Korean ceramic art and the influence on Japanese tea ceremonies by the artists are clearly evident.
